Trading Pokémon

Missing a certain Pokémon in your collection, but having trouble finding it? Or is it simply not available in your game?

Trading is your answer!

There are different ways to trade in Pokémon Sun and Moon, and in this guide they will be discussed one by one.

Quick Link

If you want to trade with people nearby, Quick Link trading is the way to go.

Just open the menu with Ⓧ and then pick Quick Link. You and the person you want to trade with then both have to touch your console's lower screen to connect with each other.

Once you're connected, select the Trade menu and start trading.

Link Trade

If your friends aren't close by, you can choose to trade with them online via Link Trade.

First of all, make sure you have each others Friend Code registered on your console.

You can do this by going to the main menu of your console, tap on the Friend List (the orange smiling box) on top, and then choose Register Friend in the top right corner.

You can either add someone locally (if they're sitting next to you) or via internet, which means you have to enter their Friend Code.

You can find your Friend Code on your own Friend Card, next to the Friend List card on the lower screen.

After registering each other in your Friend List, start up the game and choose Festival Plaza from the menu.

Then connect to the internet by activating the blue WiFi button in the bottom right corner.

Before trading, decide with your friend who is going to send a trade request and who is going to receive it.

GTS

The GTS (Global Trade System) can be used to trade with anyone in the world.

Choose Festival Plaza from the game menu and connect to the internet by activating the blue WiFi button in the bottom right corner. After that, tap on the big blue Trade button and choose «GTS».

You have two options here; you can either choose Seek Pokémon to look for Pokémon that other people have put up for trade, or you can choose Deposit Pokémon to deposit a Pokémon to trade while specifying which Pokémon you want in return.

Seek Pokémon

When seeking a Pokémon, you are asked to fill in a few fields.

When you select the «Pokémon wanted» option, you can choose the letter the Pokémon's name starts with. Be aware that only Pokémon that you have seen in your game will appear in this list.

If you haven't seen the Pokémon, scroll all the way down to choose «What Pokémon?» to type in its name.

After that, select the gender and/or level you want (or choose 'any' if it doesn't matter to you).

How to Trade Pokemon with Friends:

If you don't want to trade Mythical or Legendary Pokémon you own, tap on the Options icon in the bottom right corner and choose «Don't include».

When you've filled in everything, choose «Search with these conditions!» to start searching for the Pokémon you want.

You will get a list of people who have deposited the Pokémon you are looking for and are asking for a specific Pokémon in return.

If you only want to see trade requests with Pokémon you own, press Ⓨ, select «Pokémon the person wants», and choose «Pokémon you have». You can also select Region and specify if the Pokémon you're looking for should come from your own region or from a different region.

When you've found a person you want to trade with, tap on their picture and pick the Pokémon they're asking for from your party or PC boxes to start the trade.

Deposit Pokémon

If you can't find a good trade when seeking for the Pokémon, you can also choose to deposit a Pokémon yourself and ask for the Pokémon you want in return.

Select «Deposit Pokémon» from the GTS menu and choose the Pokémon you want to trade from your party or PC boxes.

Fill in the fields just like when you're seeking a Pokémon.

You can also choose a specific message to give more information about the Pokémon you're trading or the Pokémon you're looking for.

After filling in all the fields, select «Deposit Pokémon» and check back later to see if someone with the criteria you've picked has seeked out and traded their Pokémon for yours.

Wonder Trade

Wonder Trade makes a return.

First introduced in Pokémon X and Y, the feature allows players to randomly trade with another player using the feature.

Pokémon to Trade

There's a certain Pokémon you want, but you're not sure what to trade in return?

The following Pokémon are mostly welcomed by other trainers.

Rare Pokémon

Pokémon that are hard to get or of which you only get one in the game are always wanted by other players.

These include:

  • Starter Pokémon
  • Version exclusive Pokémon
  • Pokémon with a very low encounter rate (e.g. Bonsly and Comfey)
  • Pokémon that can only be found when called in SOS battles (e.g.

    Happiny and Mareanie)

  • Fully evolved Pokémon that can't be found in the wild (especially if they evolve by trading, with a certain item, or with high friendship)
  • Mythical and Legendary Pokémon
  • Shiny Pokémon

Useful Pokémon

Other valuable Pokémon are those that are useful when it comes to training Pokémon.

These include:

  • Pokémon with Pokérus
  • Pokémon with at least 2 perfect IVs
  • Pokémon with their hidden Ability
  • Pokémon with a good Nature that have the ability Synchronize. All Natures except Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, and Quirky are good to go.

Late Game Pokémon

Last but not least, Pokémon that appear late in the game also make good trading material, as a lot of people would like to have these Pokémon on their team earlier.

For example, Pokémon that only appear on Mount Lanakila, which you can only access right before going to the Pokémon League.

Sensu Style Oricorio is another good example, as it is only available after beating the Pokémon League.

Closing Notes

  • You are probably always hoping to receive a rare or useful Pokémon in Wonder Trade, so be kind to always deposit desirable Pokémon in return. Give and you shall receive.
  • Be aware of trading hacked or modded Pokémon.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is (e.g.

How to get into forex trading in south africa

a shiny Legendary Pokémon with 6 perfect IV's).

  • Some Pokémon evolve by trading and this also works if you receive a Pokémon from the GTS or Wonder Trade.

So if you're looking for a Gengar, you can also trade for a Haunter on the GTS and it will evolve into a Gengar when you receive it.

And vice versa, if you trade away your Haunter on the GTS, it'll transform to a Gengar for whoever you trade it with.

Other Pokémon that evolve via trade are detailed in our Pokédex. Look for the requirement «Trade» on individual Pokémon's Evolution Tree.
